Backstage is where the magic happens. The Curtains, the props, the costumes, paint, scenery, makeup, sound, lighting you name it. All of the little nuances that make the actors look good, and turn a bunch of actresses on stage into a production... all of it happens backstage. The Stage Manager is in charge of all the traffic patterns and timing backstage, part battalion commander, part den mother, her job is to keep the show rolling safely, and timely. The Prop Mistress/Master is in charge of all the little detailed pieces of the stage that aren't nailed down. Cups, Saucers, canes, tubas, swords, guns, whiskey bottles, baby bottles. If an actor carries it or uses it onstage, the Prop Master found it, and made sure it was in place when it was needed most. Not everyone wants to get involved in community theater in the same way. If being in the spotlight isn't your cup of tea, perhaps a turn operating a spotlight? Or raising the curtain? Or taking care of props? Each RCT production requires many participants who work behind the scenes to design, build and paint sets; handle lighting, sound and special effects; create costumes, make-up and props; and provide hospitality services for the audiences such as ushering, box office, refreshments and parking. Additional people take care of theater programs and publicity, plan opening night parties, read and select plays and do all of the necessary housekeeping chores that are required to maintain the playhouse. In addition to these people, others serve as directors and producers in charge of a specific theater production. RCT's excellent technical facilities provide an atmosphere of "professional theater." Experienced technicians are always happy to welcome newcomers and to assist them in "learning the ropes." No extra time right now? Make a monetary Donation to the theater!
